Feeding a toddler can seem like a loosing battle. These simple tips will help you to feel good about the things your toddler is eating.
Most toddlers go through phases where they are not interested in eating. This can be followed by periods of heavier eating. It is not uncommon for toddlers to eat one large meal a day and then pick at food for the rest of the day. They are so busy learning new things and exploring the world around them that eating is sometimes too much of a distraction. Offer a Variety of FoodsOffer a variety of foods at each meal. Even if your toddler eats only a small amount, if you are offering only healthy food you know that they are getting the nutrition that they need. A serving size for a toddler is only about the size of their closed fist so even if it may not look like they are eating much, chances are they are getting the nutrition that they need. Continue Offering New FoodsToddlers may have to see a new food on their plate several times before they are brave enough to actually try eating it. Toddlers experience food on several different levels. First they must get used to the way the food looks and then they are able to get used to the new taste experience. If your toddler refuses to try the food after you have offered it to them several times, try serving it in a different way. For example, if frozen corn is refused try offering a small ear of corn on the cob. Experiencing the food in a different way may be just what your toddler needs to learn to enjoy it. Hide NutritionExtremely picky toddlers can be tricked into eating foods that are good for them. Carrots, celery and other vegetables can be added to hamburgers and meatloaf by chopping them in a food processor or by using a food chopper such as the one offered by The Pampered Chef. Zucchini, carrots, and celery can be added to spaghetti and other favorite dishes using the same method. Serve Food in a Fun WayEating is an experience for toddlers and the more you can do to make that experience fun, the more likely your toddler will be to try new food and eat what you offer them. Dipping is a fun way for toddlers to try many foods. Simple and healthy fruit dips can be served along with strawberries, bananas, apples, and pears for a nutritious snack. Ranch dressing and other tasty dips can be served along with a variety of vegetables. Cutting vegetables up in different shapes or with a crinkle cutter can change the texture slightly and appeal to toddlers. Feeding a toddler is an adventure every day. Consistency is the key. By continuing to provide your toddler with a variety of nutritious foods they will learn to enjoy many of the foods that you offer them and develop healthy eating habits.
