Curing Infant Colic With Pediatric ChiropracticsAn Age-Old Form of Therapy Could Provide Relief for Fussy Babies
If diet changes alone do not improve the symptoms of infant colic, chiropractic treatment may provide relief.
A colicky baby can turn a joyous time in a new family's life into one of overwhelming anxiety and uncertainty. Many parents find themselves pacing the floor, time after time, with an inconsolable infant. Implementing diet changes can decrease the fussiness associated with colic in babies. Often the first recommended diet-related step in treating infant colic is to switch to soy formula, which is said to be the least gaseous infant formula available. If the Colic Baby is BreastfedAlthough breast milk is considered the best food for babies, everything the mother eats, drinks, and ingests, passes into her breast milk. It is possible that a fussy baby is reacting to something their mother has ingested, and that has been passed on to the baby in her breast milk. Another possible contributor to a baby’s gaseousness may be that the mother’s breast milk is letting down too quickly, causing the baby to gulp and ingest air. Finding out exactly what is causing the reaction, through process of elimination, could take a long time, prolonging the discomfort for everyone. Giving up breast feeding is often a very difficult decision for a woman to make. However, even in the case of breastfed babies, the frequency and severity of their colic will likely improve when they are switched to soy formula. Colic Relief Through ChiropracticsIf after making any recommended diet changes the infant is still experiencing the symptoms of colic, there are other options available. A recent study, funded by the International Canadian Pediatric Association, shows that chiropractics is considered a safe and effective alternative. Unfortunately, there are many negative assumptions associated with chiropractics in general. There is a common and misplaced fear that chiropractic therapy is painful and unsafe. Contrary to popular belief, there is no popping, snapping, or cracking involved in chiropractics, unless the patient requests it. In fact, one may be hard pressed to find a chiropractor who uses manual correction as their default form of adjustment. When treating infants and children, chiropractors use an instrument that delivers a small punch, and often place a finger between the child and the instrument to diminish the impact even further. Now the punch becomes more of a tap. The patient will experience little, if any, discomfort at all. In the case of infants, improvement is often seen in as little as one adjustment, and symptoms may virtually disappear after only two treatments. Take the Next Step Toward Colic ReliefChiropractic treatment, along with any recommended dietary improvements, may be the much needed solution for colic.
